Auline Bates, pen name A. Bates, is an American author, who has written the teen suspense novels Party Line, Final Exam,〔("Google Books" )〕 Mother's Helper, The Dead Game and Krazy 4 U. Bates's early life was spent in Washington state, New Mexico, Idaho and California, with the family moving regularly to follow her father's employment in the nuclear safety field. Eventually the family moved to Colorado. While Bates won an essay writing contest in elementary school, and always enjoyed writing, she didn't consider doing so for publication until encouraged by a college instructor. The Wall Street Journal references Final Exam in an article about "''wildly popular spooky tales and murder mysteries tailored for teenagers''" in an article entitled "Gnarlatious Novels: Lurid Thrillers for the Teen Set".〔Gamerman, Amy.
